Caneira Seals 3 Year Loan to Sporting

Sporting has secured the loan of Defender (Centre-Back/Left-Back) Marco Caneira (under contract to Valencia until 2011) untill June 2009 and Valencia has the option to have him return to Spain at the end of each season.

If Sporting is still in the Champions League by January 1st I wonder how Valencia will resist the temptation of selling Caneira should offers start coming for the loaned player?

Sporting 2005/06: 15 League Games (1350 minutes), 1 Goal, 4 Yellow Cards.

Benfica 2001/02: 27 League Games (2387 minutes).

Alverca 1999/00: 17 League Games.

Beira-Mar 1998/99: 12 League Games (962 minutes), 3 YCs, 1 RC.

Salgueiros 1997/98: 3 League Games.

Sporting 1995/96: 1 League Game (15 minutes).

I enjoy your blog, and i remember you said you enjoy youth team subjects. I enjoy it too and its the kind of posts that i read in your blog with more interest, specially because the general newspapers, in a country that needs and depends so munh on the appearance of new young players, dont give the right attention to those subjects. I´m very interested and i´ll look with special attention the euro under 19 that is approaching, and with so few information about our squad, i think it would be interesting a post about it.

Keep up the good work

Yes, I'm also looking forward to it and I'll try my best to inform people about our U-19 Squad.

I'm hoping that eventually I'll get a couple of regular contributors to the blog to cover the FC Porto and Benfica side of football so I can concentrate on Sporting and the National Squad alone. I've had 3 or 4 volunteers and I'm thinking about it.

I can't fully agree with the " 3 years loan". Altough Caneira is a very useful and defensive strong player this agreement is telling other, present or future, LB that they will play mainly at the bench, subbing for a player that doesn't belong to the club. And for 3 years!
In addition, in any given season start, Valencia, can call him back and leave Sporting without any rotinated players (remenber Rochenback's).
Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased that Caneira is staying whit Sporting!

At best we have a Centre-Back that plays the Contention Full-Back role very well and cna plsy both flanks giving Bento the option of playing him on the left in order to launch an attacking Right-Back like Abel on the right or placing Caneira on the right and launching Ronny on the left.

At worst we have him for another 12 months in which Ronney, André Marques will be 1 year more mature and possibly ready to fill the gap should he leave. I think this is the best Back-4 of the last 4 years and I hope we can maitain it for another 3 because I prefer to have a good defence isntead of this obcession of buying strikers adter strikers and always neglecting the defence.

Polga bring the technique, Tonel the athleticism, Abel the attackign dynamic and Caneira doubles up Tonel on the left and forms a 3 CB defencive line whenever Abel goes forward.

I rather keep this back-line for 3 more years thna getting Tristan, Derlei, Ricardo Oliveira or any of that crap that makes the casual supporter "daydream".

Of course if Artem Milevski were to come I wouldn't kick him out either, that kid is another Ibrahimovic.

I don't buy this stuff about Tristan. I think there is another Portuguese club interested in him and Deportivo is exagerating Sporting's interest in order to pump up the price.

I think we should try to get the relegated Juventus to loan us Grafite who was on loan to Le Mans this year and did fairly well.
